Lesbos is a large island which is worth some exploring; although some distances are considerable, the roads are quite good. We applaud the apparent aim of Lesbos tourism to present it as a relaxing island offering simple pleasures like walking and birdwatching, without the trappings of mass tourism. A bonus is that it is relatively litter free. There is a well designed leaflet promoting their museums such as the petrified forest at Sigri which is amazing. Molyvos is a 'must see'.
Although blue flag, the actual beach at Skala Kalloni did not appeal to us, since naturally, at the end of a long sea loch, to swim involved a longish walk, partly through sea grass in almost muddy sand.
The working fishing village is traditional and unpretentious.
The area is rural, with the sound of sheep/goat bells, bats in the evening, and birds to excite the twitchers!
It is ideal for peace and quiet, just relaxing in the sun or shade with a book, cooling off in the pool every now and then.
